About our property

“Max” - our (mostly) resident Australian Owlet-nightjar - possibly one of the most well photographed Owlet-nightjars in Australia

500 metres from Wyperfeld National Park

Our accommodation is set amongst Mallee bushland that has an abundance of birdlife. Guests are welcome to wander around and explore our 50-acre house property and the adjoining road reserves. The multitude of native trees and plants attract a wide range of birds, animals and insects. Bring your camera and binoculars to make the most of your time in this special spot! Guided tours are also available on our 168-acre conservation reserve.

We’re incredibly lucky to have regular visits from threatened species such as Regent Parrots and Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos. In addition to the bird life, plant nerds will have plenty to keep them stimulated. With a diverse range of flora including the threatened Umbrella Wattle, a relaxing walk around the property will reward those with keen eyes. There’s always something in flower, whether it’s Eremophila, saltbush, gum trees or grasses.

With zero light pollution, the night sky is another treat to behold. Gaze up at shooting stars and the Milky Way, and try out some night photography in these ideal conditions.

If you want to venture further afield we offer tours of local national parks and reserves and for those who wish to brush up their camera skills, photography workshops.

“THE ROOST”

The Roost is a cosy and comfortable self-contained studio flat.

Whether you stay in The Roost or on the fabulous bus, Patche Conservation Retreat is an ideal spot to explore the Mallee. It has easy access to all the nearby National Parks and Louise and Michael have the best tips on where to see birds and special local flora - so helpful! But the property itself is a real gem - bursting with local birdlife and well worth spending time at! Great for nature loving buddies, couples, but also ideal for the solo traveller.

Michael and Louise are fantastic hosts who are very passionate and knowledgeable about the local environment. They both went to great effort to ensure I saw the birds I was after. Their little slice of paradise is perfectly located, adjacent to Wyperfeld National Park. I enjoyed my time exploring there and also Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and Lake Tyrrell which are a short drive away. I loved my stay, can’t wait to visit again!
